Over time you will notice a white powdery dust on a beeswax candle, usually when the wax is cold and exposed to air. This is called "bloom" and is caused by the softer oils in the wax coming to the surface. Bloom is a good indication that your beeswax is pure. It is not harmful and may be easily removed by buffing the candle with a soft cloth.
Keep wicks centred and trimmed to 1/4" to prevent smoking and soot build-up. Periodically extinguish and retrim during usage. If the flame is large and flickering, trim wick. If the flame is struggling, pour off excess wax. Use caution.
Pillars: Burn on a heat and flame resistant surface, such as a pillar plate. Before lighting, trim wick to 1/4". Allow the wax pool to reach the edge of the candle each time it is lit (about one hour for every diameter inch of the candle). To prevent dripping and to contain the wax pool, as the pillar burns down, hand-form the top edges in toward the centre while the wax is warm and pliable. Use caution.
Votives: This candle will become liquid. Always burn in a votive holder. Before placing the candle in the holder, put a small amount of water or coarse salt in the bottom of the holder. This will allow for easier removal after the candle has burned down.
Tealights: This candle will become liquid. Always burn in a tealight holder. They are best burned in one lighting.
Containers: Burn until wax is liquid to edge of container but no more than four hours at a time. Allow wax to harden before relighting. Discontinue use when only 1/2" of wax remains in bottom. Never close the lid on a burning candle. Do not allow flame to touch the container. Keep wick centred.
General Tips:
- Always burn on a stable, heat resistant surface.
- Keep out of drafts and away from flammable material.
- Do not move while hot.
- Keep wax pool free from foreign objects i.e. matches, cut wicks.
- Store candles out of direct sunlight.
